Lecture

Week 1

Task 1/ Exercise 1: Typographic Systems
Purpose of typographic systems is provided more emphasis , guide decision-making to communicate with users. Besides, in this project we need to pay more attentions on the fundamental knowledges. For example, line-heights may even influence many other structural elements like spacing and grids. Typography is often one of the foundational components you will want to get a handle on as it will need to work harmoniously with other elements.

There are 8 important Typographic Systems :

1. Axial  ~ All elements are organised to the left or right of a single axis.

Figure 1 Axial

2. Bilateral ~All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

Figure 2 Bilateral

3. Diatational ~All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.

Figure 3 Diatational

4. Grid ~A system of vertical or horizontal divisions.

Figure 4 Grid

5. Modular ~A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a standardised unit.

Figure 5 Modular

6. Radial ~ All elements are extended from a point of focus.

Figure 6 Radial

7. Random ~Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.

8. Transitional ~An informal system of layered banding.

My Sketch

~I still don't have any ideas, but I'm starting to digitalize some of these sketches so I can get inspiration along the way.

Task 1/ Exercise 2: Type and Play (Part 1)
~ We are going to find 4 letters from any image and refine them.

~ The letters I found in this image are A, B, C, D, E, G, I, L, M, P, R, S, T, U,W, X & Y

Task 1 Exercise 2: Type and Image (Part 2)

~This task we will combine visual with words or sentence. The aim is to enhance the interplay between the selected visual and the words.

Feedback

Week 2
Specific &General Feedback:

  • Axial : Align to the side. All information must be align and follow the line.

  • Bilateral : Letter spacing too much on top and bottom too little . Never use outline for text .

  • Dilatational : The outer section is not dilatational. It does’t look like one circle or two circle. Generally , it should be one circle and then another circle . Other than that the center is fine.

  • Grid :Outline is not allow in text. The two line under the title are not reason putting there. Make sure to have a good alignment. l have a lot of different leading .It should be consistent throughout .

  • Modular :"All ripped up” and “Punk in design” should be treated similarly and related. The mistake putting the body text and headline.

  • Radial :It all had to be pointing toward one point. Mine look like pointing somewhere else .It can be many point but it must be pointing in one point.

  • Random : It is ok .Not bad

  • Transitional :Good .Not bad

Week 3
General Feedback: ~Finding a typeface reference is a good way in order for us to design a better typeface.
Personal Feedback: ~Did not present my work( have not got inspiration)

Week 4
General Feedback: ~I not getting there the shoes. It's an interesting eclectic .If I base my shapes exactly on what I extracted I're going to have problems with it like what I having right now. The extraction would work if the item is repetitive in nature but in my case it's not repetitive because I got different shape  that's why it doesn't work .I can use Abigail 's crystal as reference

Week 5
General Feedback: ~.It does strangely kind of work with the weirdness of the picture in a strange way because it's a strange picture so I'll just let it go the way it is but it's not really integrated but in a way one could argue because with strangeness it is integrated.

Week7
General Feedback: ~Exercise 1: Exciting work, well done. Exercise 2: FT good attempt, T&I is strange and acceptable. Format your feedback properly below.

Reflection

ExperienceI had learned how to make some aesthetic layouts by using the basics typography formats such as the leading, point size and  alignments .I love the way to design the information to people and it is really more eye-catching. In exercise2, I enjoy to blend the letters in our life because I had a creative thinking skills. Mr.Vinod had teached me using the object's features to design a letter and this idea had helped a lot in exercise2  part 1 and I love the results.

Observation: I had noticed observation and knowledge improved a lot .Because I had explore a lot of design and learning how to using other ideas to create our own design .There 's a saying goes, to steal ideas from someone is plagiarism; to stealing from many is research.

Finding :I would like to follow senior as my role model like Jia Sheng, Tressa and so on.

Just My Type's Book Cover (2010)

Simon Garfield's Just My Type is a new and insightful reference book for both type novices and design techies. In the context of history and culture, he explores both common and unusual typographic issues. It  introduce Comic Sans on pages 17 to 24 of the book, one that looks nice but is actually written by an 11-year-old. If you see a word with a different colour for each letter, it's usually Comic Sans. Not only that, but he uses different fonts to highlight key points in the book, which is very interesting and well worth reading.
