TASK 3(A): Type Design and Communication

We will be designing typeface that has the hallmarks of a good typeface; subtlety, character, presence, legibility and readability. Below are the letters you will design: a i m e p y t g d o b ! , .

The goal of this project is to educate us how to design an excellent typeface, including subtlety, character, presence, legibility, and readability. Starting with research, sketches, and recognising and analyzing references is the best way to get started. We using Ai and Fontlab 7 to do this task.

Visual Research #1

Figure 1 Lim Jia Sheng 's work (12.10.21)

Figure 1.2 Visual Research from google (12.10.21)

I decided to work on serif fonts. I got a lot of inspiration from Jia Sheng's works, he showed creativity and professionalism in constructing letters. I want to follow him as an example, although it is still far away, but I will try it slowly.

Figure 1.3 Graffiti Font (12.10.21)

I also want to explore some graffiti fonts as a reference, because I like the style of graffiti, although it looks messy but actually simple and rude art night to find its own unique style.

My Decision :

Figure 4 Sketch #1 (12.10.21)

I was confused between Sketch #1 and Sketch #3 and I let my friends to choose .So ,most of them choosing sketch #1 because it looks more interesting ,they not really like graffiti font because they think that messy and irregular .

Figure 4.3 My Procession First Attempt in Ai (15.10.21)

I think I need to thicken the font but Mr. Vinod told me can explore more because it is too difficult . Besides , it has too many things happened in the letter. At the beginning, I wanted to stick to this font, but after thinking about it, I felt that I didn't have time to adjust it. (20.10.21)

After received the feedback ,I  staying the class to show the sketches #2 and #3 that I haven't show him in independent week. Hence, I decided to choose back the graffiti font, simple and rude.

Visual Research #2

Figure 5 Google Display Font (22.10.21)

I had found some fonts look alike my sketch design so I using this as reference.

The design of this like irregular font because I want to have the graffiti font style. I also reduce the wavy .Then the font letters will be slightly diagonal to the right a bit.

Feedback

Week 8
General Feedback: At least 5 sketches are needed. Before we digitise them, we must consider the character's shape. Draw the basic shape and explore with its forms. Strong characteristics, such as condensed, wide, or rounded, are preferable in our design. In order for our design to represent a typeface, the weight distribution of the letterforms must be consistent.

Week 9 :
General Feedback: too difficult ,too many things going on and different thickness on 1st progress.
Sketch #3 too wavy .Try looking reference do a little bit of research,go to google fonts click display. Look for display categories and then look at the fancy typeface and feel alike the sketch, learn from it .Do less flamboyant and less decorated. I have the tendency to decorate my font. I need dial it that to reduce it a little bit.

Week 10 :
No feedback.

Reflection

ExperienceI have experienced how to do a little more preparation or try. If you are not satisfied with the first job, you can take the second idea of the job or mix the two methods together to get better results. I also found my favorite style in this class, which is Graffiti font, which is really interesting.

Observation: I found that Mr. Vinod has become more patient than usual. I am grateful to him because I almost gave up on this task. When designing Skecth #1 because it was really difficult, I was frustrated when my work was rejected. But Mr.Vinod told me I can try simple typeface it does not take very long time. This sentence actually had encourage to keep going . Thank you.

Finding : Explore more graffiti font and art to get inspired and try it one day when this pandemic end !

Graffiti Cookbook: The Complete Do-It-Yourself-Guide to Graffiti

Graffiti  is  an  art  form  close  to  both  music  and  dance,  as  well  as  other expressions like Chinese calligraphy and martial arts. Most writers repeat the same movement, the same shape, over and over again to gain a steady hand and create a personal style. In the book it tell me "The most important thing is to have fun. Creating is fun !" The excited of this book is learning the spray techniques and hand styles to tools and style analysis.
