Lecture

Week 1 / Introduction & Briefing

We were introduced to two of our lecturers which is Mr Vinod and Dr Charles. During the first live class, Mr. Vinod explained our module outline and expectations .We were informed that the Facebook group will be our main platform, where all course materials and important announcements can be found. Then, he also gave some examples of past student works for our reference. After a small break, he guided us on how to create our e-portfolio and reviewed some of the created portfolio links. He handed us our first task for us to start on which is Type Expressions before the session  ended.

Recorded Lecture

Font is defined as an individual font or weight within a family of typefaces, while Typeface is defined as a series of typefaces that share similar qualities. After that, we were told to download the 10 Types .

Week 2

First, in the second lesson, Mr. Vinod instructed us to post our draft text in the Facebook Typography Group's comments section. After that, He started teaching us how to save jpeg files in Adobe Illustrator. After Mr Vinod demonstrated how to accomplish it, he began randomly selecting and providing feedback, as well as teaching several tools to assist help us in font design. Mr. Vinod hopes that we may all learn from each other, comment on each other's work, and improve together. He separated us into ten groups, each with its own discussion area. Each group has four students in it. As a guidance on how to provide feedback, we asked four questions of friends' sketches.

4 problems to ask :
  • Is the exploration sufficient?
  • Does the expression match the meaning of the word?
  • In the range of 1-5, how strong is this idea?
  • How to improve the work?
Lastly, our lecturer showed us our senior year's  portfolio, which will be our guide on what a portfolio should look like.

Week 3

Mr Vinod explains us about kreatif beats and troublemakers' assembly Facebook. We can also visit its Twitter account to see those beautiful works oror refer to to get more knowledge.  Then he got into a discussion about the fonts that everyone had created with Adobe Illustrator. He was hoped that we would use the space that have given. Mr. Charles reminded everyone to update their e-portfolio after Mr. Vinod provided his views. Following that, Mr. Vinod w e were given the task of creating a gif type expression, after which we were given the option of meeting in a breakout room to discuss and create a gif together. After commenting on everyone's gif, Mr. Vinod ended the lesson.

Instruction

Exercise 1: Type Expressions

We are to choose four words and express them as our first task. We chose the words via voting our friends on Facebook. Mr Vinod narrowed down the top 7 words after the voting was completed, and we were given the task of choosing three words from the list. The fourth word, Terror, was picked by Mr Vinod and Dr Charles. The selections for the other three words for us to express.

  • Terror (Mandatory)
  • Error
  • Melt
  • Light
  • Gone
  • Pour
  • Shiver

The progress of exploring word designs:

Figure 1 Error Word Sketches (29/08/2021)

Sketch 1  Planning to do  'O' with the sign of stop entry the website and using the Univers LT Std.

Figure 1.2 Terror Word Sketches (29/08/2021)

Sketch 1  :  To express my fear, my first thought was grim reaper and guns. So I use'T' as the sickle of grim reaper . In the middle is the small font of fear and fear, but the "r" at the end also becomes a gun to bring them to the grim reaper .

Figure 1.3 Gone Word Sketches (29/08/2021)

Sketch 1 I want to use the effect in the Avengers which is they slowly turn into ashes.

Figure 1.4 Melt Word Sketches (29/08/2021)

Sketch 1  :  Melting is produced when encountering heat. So I decided that ‘M’ was responsible for breathing fire, and the ‘E’,’L’,’T’ were slowly melted.

Sketch 2 :  Futura Std had been used and I'm using the cheese melting and ice melting.

Sketch 3 : The Gill Sans Std is a classic, concise, and beautiful design. It was originally positioned as a title font (Display typeface). It is used for posters, advertisements, or long-distance, small fonts, and still need to maintain good legibility documents, such as book introductions, Timetables and price lists, etc.

Figure 1.5 Pour Word Sketches (29/08/2021)

Sketch 1  : I design the water pouring from the top and pour it in the typeface.

Sketch 2  :  The 'P' is the tea pot and pour into o, u, r.

Sketch 3  : The different to sketch 3 is pour out the words.

After receiving ideas and compliments ,for the other 3 word choices I decided to do the words which is Error, Melt and Pour. The improved design is as follows:

Figure 2 [Previous] Terror 1.0 (29/08/2021)

Figure 2.2  [After] Terror  1.5 (02/09/2021)

The feedback of the previous terror has a lot of information so I decided to decrease the graphic and work with the font design.

Figure 2.3 [Previous] Error 1.0 (29/08/2021)

I decided to smaller the exclamation mark so that can decrease the emphasis.

Figure 2.5  Melt (29/08/2021)

I love the design and I keep using it first.

Figure 2.6  Melt (29/08/2021)

After feedback, I need to continue improve it to decrease the graphic and look more better.

Started the Process:
1. identify the appropriate typeface
2. sketch your ideas out for each word, 3. digitize the artwork in illustrator.

Words (to be decided):
Figure 2.7 Digital Terror 1.0

I decided to change the "T" even more terror and the reaper hook will turn back to the font which is Serifa Std.
Figure 2.8  Digital Error 1.5 (02/09/2021)

After the feedback of Error 1.0 , I create another one which had adjust the size of the exclamation mark and strengthen the design . I change the font into Bodoni Std because this font look more similar to the computer font and I chose one of the 'r' maintain the Univers LT Std font.

Figure 2.8  Digital Pour 1.0 (02/09/2021)

After the feedback of  Pour , I try to keep my own concept design which is combined sketch 2 & 3 and  this is the result.

Figure 2.9 Digital Melt 1.0 (02/09/2021)

After the feedback of Melt is good so I keep but I notice the word of the "e" has a little weird and it  confused me. I wonder is it there have two white hole when the "e" was melting.

Update 2:

Figure 3 Digital Terror 2.0 (04/09/2021)

After the general feedback I try to design the "T" into even more terror and like a snake but it screaming like a  dinosaur.
Figure 3.2 Digital Error 2.0 (04/09/2021)

After the general feedback I try to enhance it with color and I had delete an exclamation mark and I still did not have any idea to improve my type expression so I will keep exploring .
Figure 3.2 Digital Error 2.0 (04/09/2021)

After the general feedback I had delete the dark outline of "O, U, R" and the teapot handle . Besides, I also try with fonts and the outcome look nice.

Figure 3.3 Digital Melt 2.0 (04/09/2021)

Because the top hole of the"e" to weird and I delete the white hole , adjust a little bit the flow of the melting and it turns out that the effect is more better. This is the type expression I expected so I 'm satisfied.

Update 3 (Final Outcomes) :

Figure 4 Digital Terror 2.0 (08/09/2021)

I chose this as my final result because the can show more the terror than the reaper 's hook and we can see the zig zag line show the loud roar and it tongue and teeth show it's hunger and how much it want to eat them.

Figure 4.2 Digital Error 3.0 (04/09/2021)
Figure 4.2 Digital Error 4.0 (08/09/2021)

I think this result has become much better than before. I'm satisfied because I replaced the uppercase R of Univers LT Std with lowercase fonts and the problematic "O". Contrast and emphasis was created.

Figure 4.3 Digital Pour 3.0 (08/09/2021)

The reason I keep using this design because I want give the imagination to the viewer. The shape of the "O, U, R" is a cup and the "P" which is tea pot that trying to fill all the words. Then the viewers will imagine the Univers Lt Std 's cup and fill with a lot of Univers Lt Std 's water. It is very interesting

Figure 4.4 Digital Melt 2.0 (08/09/2021)

This is my favourite one .The concept of this design is melting on the sofa ,this idea was came out when I lying tiredly on the sofa and my sitting posture is the same as this design . So this type expression can exactly represent describing myself.

Started the Animate:

We must choose one expression and animate it in Ai and Ps but I want to explore more so I taken two words which is "TERROR" and “MELT”.

The First Attempt :

Figure 5 Terror's Animate Frames (09/09/2021)

I want "T" to chase them while roaring with the beast. At the same time, I also stretched the mouth of "T" to look like the mouth of a switch.

Figure 5.2 Type Expression of Terror  (09/09/2021)

Figure 5.3 Melt's Animate Frames (10/09/2021)

Melt on the sofa is the concept of the melt 's design .I had using free transform here. To show a nice
angle.

Figure 5.4 Timeline (10/09/2021)

Adjust the time in timeline to ensure smooth playback.

Figure 5.5 Type Expression of Melt (10/09/2021)

I decided to choose "Melt" because I like my own concept and no one has used this design idea yet. Besides, the outcome also came out well .It is more interesting than the terror I made because the design of terror is too common.

EXERCISE 2 / TASK 1: Text Formatting

Type selection, type size, leading, line-length, paragraph spacing, forced-line-break, alignment, and kerning are all aspects of text formatting that must be addressed in a layout. To accomplish this assignment, we will need to use Adobe InDesign. There are a number of video tutorials available. We must view all of the videos and do the activities outlined in them.

Kerning and Tracking

I practised kerning and tracking my name with the 10 typefaces after watching the video tutorial. It's interesting to see several versions of my name, and I satisfied the Adobe Caslon Pro and Bodoni Std results.

Feedback

Week  1
General Feedback: Lines must be used to separate sections of the blog, and MIB must be embedded. Follow the template in the video tutorial.
Specific Feedback: The blog is well-organized. Begin working on your reflections and further reading.

Week2
General Feedback:
~Terror:  It has a lot of information.
~ Error: The feedback of error 1.0 some of them say it look nice and the exploration match the meaning of the word and some of them given a suggestion which is smaller the exclamation mark to decrease the emphasis.
~ Melt : Melt is the most people ratification.
~ Pour:  Some of them give 4 points for the first and second in the range 1 to 5. But I also have the comments that is the first one and the second one are too graphic. So I'll need to continue improve it.

Week 3
General Feedback:The majority of students make the same issue, which is that the expression does not dominate the available area.
~Terror:  The "T" can be more terror but change the reaper hook back to the font which is Serifa Std.
~ Error: Keep exploring and change the "o" (the sign of stop entry the website. )
~ Melt : Maybe can delete the cup handle and no need the dark line ,try with fonts.
~ Pour:  What is the white hole for ? (top hole of the"e")

Week 4
General Feedback : Mr. Vinod cautioned us not to remove any comments from the lecturer that was posted in the Google Sheet Feedback Form. We need to summarise what we learned from the pre-recorded lecture for our E-Portfolio., According to him only the final submission designs must be included in the E-Portfolio. On each figure, he also reminded us to add the date of the final/in-progress work, as well as the file type selected. He also gave us examples of senior work to use as examples of how to correctly complete the E-Portfolio. Dr. Charles will examine the evidence of whether we completed the pre-recorded lecture exercises, while Mr. Vinod will examine the evidence of the task's progression. We must save the Final Digitalized Type Expression as Greyscale in order to export it.

Reflection

ExperienceThis class taught me how to accept everyone's differing viewpoints on a consistent basis, which allowed me to learn two things. The first is self-confidence and persistence, since I want to keep self-confidence and persistence in the design by working hard and having my own purpose, and allowing everyone to understand and accept my design. The second is to accept that by getting better feedback, we can enhance our design and allow everyone, including you ourselves, to accept it. I have also experienced how to transform the fonts used in my life around me into designs, which is very interesting and challenging. I also faced some problems when I started using blogger and I have become more proficient in it now. I have just come into contact with Adobe InDesign recently, I think it’s very good to learn one more interesting knowledge.

Observation:  My understanding of typefaces has greatly improved as a result of this course. Because I am used to use graphics and have never tried to change the font to expression, my carelessness caused my own timetable. I've observed that, although is same word, everyone's ability to convey typefaces is different. They will employ some creative thinking to improve the quality of the work. I've also observed that different fonts have various weights and can express different messages.

Finding : I also need to restrict myself occasionally in life. I can learn more from this restriction, as if Mr. Vinod only gave us 10 fonts and then thought about how to express them. Still need to continue to look for more font history and word design inspiration and design better and own fonts. Find more professional font designs to find inspiration, so that I can improve myself.

Lettering & Type: Creating Letters Designing Typefaces 's Book Cover  (2009)

This book goes beyond the basics of typographic arrangement (line length, line spacing, column structure, page layout, etc.) to focus on the form and construction of letters themselves. While typography uses standardized letterforms, the older arts of lettering and handwriting consist of unique forms made with a variety of tools. Today, the applications and potential of lettering and type are broader than ever before, as designers create handmade letterforms, experimental alphabets, and sixteenth-century typeface revivals with equal confidence . (Page 7)

The book’s voice and philosophy reflect the authors’ unique point of view as artists and thinkers. Letters, they suggest, are alive and kicking. Anyone who is fueled with a dose of desire and an ounce of courage is invited to plunge in and take on twenty-six of the world’s most infamous and influential characters. The language of letters ranges from the complicated of fonts designed for books to the singular quirks of custom logotypes and the clandestine mysteries of graffiti. It’s all there to be explored and grappled with. Anyone who tries a hand at designing letters will walk away with at the very least a deepened respect for the opponent
