Design Principle
Week 1 / Introduction & Briefing
In the design principles lesson, we met Dr. Jinchi . In class, she provided us some vital details and an overview. We
learned about design features, design concepts, and general information
about design works through the team's recorded lectures. These procedures
are crucial in the design process.
The Elements of Design
- Consist of point, line, shape, form, texture, space
- consist of 11 elements: contrast, balance, emphasis, rules of third, repetition/ pattern/ rhythm, movement, hierarchy, alignment, harmony, unity and proportion.
1. Point ~ It is the first and simplest element of visual design. Point serves as the focus of something visual, and therefore draws attention.
2. Line ~ Line is probalby the most fundamental of all the elements of
design. Lines can be active or static, aggressive or passive,
sensual or mechanical. They can indicate directions, define
boundaries of shapes, imply volumes and suggest motion or
emotion.
3. Shape ~ A shape is a two- or three-dimensional object that stands out from
the space next to because of a defined or implied boundary. A shape
can live in different areas in space, and have other elements like
line, color, texture, or movement. Like forms, shapes come in two
different types: geometric and organic.
4. Form ~ Form is three-dimensional and encloses volume, having length, width, and height, versus shape, which is two-dimensional, or flat. A form is a shape in three dimensions, and, like shapes, can be geometric or organic.
5. Texture ~ Texture is defined as a tactile quality of an object's surface.
It appeals to our sense of touch, which can evoke feelings of
pleasure, discomfort, or familiarity. Visual or implied texture
can be simulated or invented.
6. Color ~ Color has three main properties: hue, value and intensity.
7. Space ~ The element of design space refers to the area within, around,
above or below an object or objects. It is important to creating and
understanding both two dimensional or three dimensional works of
art. With three dimensional art the space things occupy is real as
is the space around object. In two dimensional art this is
definitely not the case. Two dimensional art exists on a flat
surface, so if something looks three dimensional.
The Principles of Design
1. Contrast ~ Contrast occurs when two or more visual elements in a composition
are different. In design we use contrast to generate impact,
highlight importance, create exciting graphics and create visual
interest and dynamics.
Figure 1.1 Contrast (25.08.21)
2. Balance ~ the
way visual elements are arranged so that their visual weight
harmonizes with the other elements ,and composition gives an
appearance of properly distributed elements.
Figure 1.2 Balance (25.08.21)
3. Emphasis ~ aim to viewer's
attention to a design element.
Figure 1.3 Emphasis (25.08.21)
4.Rule of thirds ~ a way to look at the layout of a design .It devided equally
into thirds, both horizontally and vertically on the space
Figure 1.4 Rule of third (25.08.21)
5.Rhythm ~
like movements or action. It usually achieved through repetition
of line, shapes, colors, and more. It creates a visual tempo in
artworks and provides a path for viewer's eye to
follow
Figure 1.5 Rhythm (25.08.21)
6.Movement ~ show action and
feeling of motion within a composition .It serves as a guide
to direct the eye from one element to the next.
Figure 1.6 Movement (25.08.21)
7.Hierarchy ~ is helps inform, impress and persuade users, who have
expectations especially about an interface 's appearance.
Figure 1.7 Hierarchy (25.08.21)
8.Alignment ~ It create a sharp, ordered appearance for ultimately
better designs by ensuring our various elements have
pleasing connection with each other.
Figure 1.8 Alignment (25.08.21)
9.Harmony ~ The sense of cohesiveness between the elements in a
composition. Color palettes or similar textures can
create a sense of unity between different components.
Using similarly shaped items will create harmony
because they will seem related.
Figure 1.9 Harmony (25.08.21)
10.Unity ~ It unifies all other principles within a piece of work, allowing
each individual element to coexist with one another to form an
aesthetically pleasing design. It gives the appearance of
cohesiveness despite its internal components differing in scale,
contrast , or style.
Figure 2.1 Unity (25.08.21)
11.Proportion ~ It pertains to the relative size of the components that compose an
object.
Figure 2.2 Proportion (25.08.21)
Contrast and Gestalt Theory
1 . Contrast ~ Contrast occurs when two or more visual elements in a composition are
different. In design we use contrast to generate impact, highlight
importance, create exciting graphics and create visual interest and
dynamics.
2
. Gestalt Theory ~ Gestalt theory are rules that
describe how the human eye perceives
visual elements. It aim to show how
complex scenes can be reduced to
more simple shapes and the eyes
perceive the shapes as a single,
united form rather than the separate
simpler elements involved.
- Similarity (similar elements in a design )
- Continuation (show a continuous flow of visual elements)
- Closure (people will fill in blanks to perceive a complete object whenever an external stimulus partially matches that object. Even missing information, we tend to make sense of our environment by filling in the gaps to see a complete object. This recognition happens automatically. )
- Proximity (items close together are likely to be perceived as part of the same group [sharing similar functionality or traits].)
- Figure/ Ground (people instinctively perceive objects as either being in the foreground or the background. They either stand out prominently in the front or recede into the back.)
- Symmetry and Order (objects that are symmetrical with each other will be more likely to be grouped together than objects not symmetrical with each other .)
Instruction
Exercise 1
- Produce 1 design of Gestalt theory and1 design of Contrast
1. Contrast & Gestalt Theory #1
Figure 3.1 My Work 1.0 (05.09.21)
As we can see these are my first attempt of contrast and gestalt theory. It seem too common due to I
did not have any idea to design my own style. Dr. Jinchi's suggest me to explore more.
Idea & Exploration 1
2. Contrast #2
Figure 3.2 Contrast (08.09.21)
~ This idea is came from "The Creation of Adam" . I want to
express through the contrast design that people who are wicked soul can become
beautiful, and people with purity of soul can also become dark.. I use
butterflies to represent the purity of soul ,and the bats are the wicked soul.
In the process of designing the hand, I have been hesitant to draw the shadow
of the hand because it is very strange, so I am trying to use various lines
such as wavy line, oblique line, or solid color to get the shadow of the hand.
In the end, I chose to use the shadow-based outline.
Idea & Exploration 2
Figure 3.3 The Cat in the Hat [the book on shelf] (08.09.21)
~ After Dr. Jinchi review , I 'm also had inspired by everyone 's works. I
came out an idea from my story book I read when I was a kid on the shelf where
we collect books. This book gave me a lot of happiness in my childhood because
this character is very funny and his most impressive feature is that he wears
a hat with red line and a red bow on the neck, like Chaplin turned into
a cat.
Figure 3.4 Mr. Tickle (08.09.21)
~ I started to research the characters that wearing hats and I found out all
of them have a smiling face such as Mr Tickle, Pocoyo, Russell (in UP Movie)
and so on. Therefore, I decided to
create my own design role. I want to design his face with anger and
expressionless face. And the interesting thing is that every funny action he
makes with this expression must be very interesting.
Figure 3.5 Mr. Man sketch (08.09.21)
3. Contrast #3
Figure 4 Mr. Man Contrast (08.09.21)
~ In
fact, the idea of this character's character is based on a kid of my
friend who is a cute little girl . In fact, their expressions look fierce
and do not express emotions, but in fact they have a lovely heart. Because I
found that when I was chatting with my friend, she would hide from the side
and watch us chat with a little bit of jealousy, but the expression of her
face remained the same like Mr. Man's reaction, it was really cute. So this
is the idea of this design.
4. Gestalt Theory (Symmetry & Order) #2
Figure 5 Different hand poses Mr. Man (08.09.21)
~ First of all, I am looking for different hands poses when kicking the
plank. The last image is my last choice. The original idea was that at
first I just wanted Mr. Man to split and watch with his hands folded, but
suddenly an idea came out, that is, karate kick! So this is the idea of this picture.
Final Outcomes
Gestalt Theory (Symmetry & Order)
PDF File of Gestalt Theory (Symmetry & Order) -Mr. Man's Karate Kick !
Story
~Mr. Man tried to learn karate kicks to train his self-defense ability. Mr. Man insisted on wearing his favorite suit to learn karate kick. No one can stop him from wearing it because he has a serious expression on his face. He took a cute and serious expression and his clothes to learn the awesome karate kick.
Contrast
PDF File of Contrast - Mr. Man's Jealous
Story
~Mr. Man was taken surprised when he saw his dearest friend walking by. Then he secretly followed him and discovered that a guy was having a good conversation with someone, so innocent Mr. Man was staring at the wall with childish jealousy.
Feedback
Dr. Jinchi comments my work 1.0 was too common and I agree with that
because I did not had any ideas to create a design with my own design. But
Dr Jinchi suggestions had help me to improve my work 1.0.
Good and crop the white space a bit (Contrast)
Obvious symmetry, Nice, Good job! (Symmetry & Order)
Reflection
I had learned a lot after the class and I really grateful that everyone 's
work are perfect and they had inspired me a lot. They are very talent and I
am excited to see their work in next session .I also enjoy the process of designing a lovely Mr. Man. When designing him, I wanted to think about how to integrate him with the principle of design. After finishing my design, I also like my final outcome.
