Lecture

Week 1 / Introduction & Briefing

We were introduced (Harmony & Unity) and (Symbol, Word & Image) in Microsoft Teams.

The Principles of Design

1. Harmony ~ the group of items with such a common feature .Without variation, it becomes monotonous. Giving the illusion that all of the pieces are connected. Patterns, colors, themes, and other aspects of the design that fit together are examples of harmony.

2. Unity ~ To bring the style together, repeating specific elements (colours, forms, or materials) throughout your design. Creating a sense of unity.

Figure 1.2 Unity (20/09/21)

3. Symbol~ A symbol is a sign, a shape, or an object that represents something. Symbols are used to express information. In the modern world, symbols are still usually utilized in logos, concepts, and ideals, which is why they are significant. Visuals and graphic symbols are examples of figurative representation. There are three kinds of graphic symbols.
  • Pictorial symbols ~ It's all about images and simplistic illustrations. It's a good representation of the original form, but it had been simplified.
Figure 2 Pictorial symbols (20/09/21)
  • Abstract Symbols ~ They may resemble the item they represent, but with less detail. It's all around us, and it doesn't take long to figure out what it is.
Figure 2.2 Abstract symbols (20/09/21)
  • Arbitrary Symbols ~ It implies that the symbols bear no similarity to the objects or concepts they represent. The sign is created first, and then the meaning is built. Many arbitrary symbols are based on geometric shape and color, and the viewer must figure out what they are.

4. Word and Image ~ Design heavily relies on imagery. It's crucial to use the correct words to go with the images because it will help to clarify the message.

Instruction

Idea & Exploration 1

Figure 4 The Cat in the Hat [the book on shelf] (08.09.21)

~ After Dr. Jinchi review , I 'm also had inspired by everyone 's works. I came out an idea from my story book I read when I was a kid on the shelf where we collect books. This book gave me a lot of happiness in my childhood because this character is very funny and his most impressive feature is that he wears a hat with  red line and a red bow on the neck, like Chaplin turned into a cat.

Figure 4.2 Pocoyo (08.09.21)

I started to research the characters that wearing hats and I found out all of them have a smiling face such as Mr Tickle, Pocoyo, Russell (in UP Movie) and so on. Therefore, I decided to create my own design role. I want to design his face with anger and expressionless face. And the interesting thing is that every funny action he makes with this expression must be very interesting.

Figure 4.3 Mr. Man sketch (08.09.21)

~ I started to sketch out Mr. Man and this is the expression that I want it and  I really like it.

Visual Research  (Unity)

Idea of Exercise 3 (Unity)
I want to using the idea of visual research and using different type of Mr. Man to express unity .This means that even if they look different, they are still one of Mr. Man like a split personality. After that, I want to choose different styles of art to design different kinds of Mr .Man because I want to commemorate the painting style and the portrait of those unique famous paintings.

Idea & Exploration 2

Figure 6 Wang Wei 王维 (21.09.21)

The reason I chose him because he is a famous Chinese poet and painter, and he is our pride. Not only that, I also like his beautiful poems. Secondly, I also want to use his facial features and the colors of other people's ink paintings on Mr. Man. Lastly, I want to use him as the central reason to convey that I am Chinese.

Figure 6.2 Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer (21.09.21)

The reason I chose this style is that I want to use two different styles of Mr. Man who are dressed as women. And I really like everything about this painting such as her dress, the beautiful look of her looking back and the mysterious darkness as the background.

Figure 6.3 Portrait of woman (Dora Maar) by Pablo Picasso (21.09.21)

I chose this untitled portrait of Dora Maar by Pablo Picasso because I really like his Cubism. Not only that, he also designed her face into a unique shape, using different browns to make her face three-dimensional. The cutest thing is to turn the eyebrows into a line. Finally, it is Mr. Man who uses Picasso's painting design. Isn’t it interesting?

Figure 6.4 Edna Mode (21.09.21)

The reason I chose the character of Pixar because I found that the Pixar style filters were very popular before. So I decided to explore the fierce character in pixar .I had found Edna Mode in "Incredible"and Anger in "Inside out" .But in the end ,I chose Edna Mode because she is more in line with Mr. Man than Anger due to the character design is very prominent.

Figure 6.5 Cubism  by the artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris
and combine with Peinture figurative by Michele Anne Brosseau (21.09.21)

The reason why they decided to combine their two styles of facial features is because their facial features are very similar. Pablo Picasso's painting on the left has no eyebrows and eyeballs but has a similar nose bridge to the painting on the right. Therefore, Mr. Man became more energetic after the combination.

Figure 6.6 Untitled Portrait of woman (Dora Maar) by Pablo Picasso (21.09.21)

You can see how much I admire Pablo Picasso's art as a result of this procedure. Because of the colours he used and the manner he painted them, I chose this pair this time. He employs various shades of cyan as shadows, and the usage of blue as a flesh tone is particularly intriguing. Last is his cubist style that he good at also is my favourite too.

Idea 3

Words and Image

Figure Original Picture taken from my home sweet home (31.01.21) (25.09.21)

I had used Photoshop and Lightroom to play the filter .I use the cooling filter because Mr. Man has a cool and indifferent personality.

Attempt #1

Figure 8.2 Try with graphic (25.09.21)

I try to use the Showcard Gothic font and the graphic to express the playful and matched in Mr. Man.

Attempt #2

Figure 8.3 (25.09.21)

Figure 8.4  (30.09.21)

After Dr. Jinchi' reviews I choosing the regular font that is Helvetica typeface to let the font more stable. Besides, I also had changed the words to invite people to have a drinks "Let's Drink!" is more suitable. The reason I use the idea of size is that his volume is gradually increasing. For example, Mr. Man is shy and gradually courageously invites everyone to drink together and I  had using the perspective and alignment to show the typeface.

Final Outcomes

Feedback

Dr. Jinchi given some advices to improve my words and image and I satisfied the final outcome.

Explain why you choosing those characters (Unity )

Typeface not suitable, make it narrow ,try Helvetica font to make it more stable ,to invite people to have a drink should be like "Let 's Drink!"  and last is you need to align.

Reflection

I'm motivated to start using my characters to finish my objective, which is to undertake a series of Mr. Man exercises. It's really exciting to be able to collaborate with my favourite painter this time. Not only that, but I really adore photoshop and shooting, so the entire process is enjoyable for me.
